Cortland Repertory Theatre musical pays tribute to 'greatest singer'

What could be more entertaining than spending a couple of hours listening to the tunes made famous by Tony Bennett, the guy Frank Sinatra called "the greatest singer?" No matter what age, not much.
That makes "I Left My Heart," the Cortland Repertory season's closer, which boasts 30 songs, a joy from the outset.
Well, there could be some hesitation regarding three tenors performing them. Rarely does the production register as needing a richer sound, especially when Don Davis, Marc Goldhaber and David Shane harmonize. The sound is amazing.
The four-member band lent strong support to the trio, but it was Jeff Stockham's hot trumpet that stood out and, happily, was singled out for some solos.
Director-choreographer Daniel Hess set a brisk pace, although it slowed when appropriate. Despite an occasional sit on stools, his movement kept the threesome moving so the show never felt confined.
Producing artistic director Kerby Thompson has developed a knack for finding intimate musicals that are ideal for his venue. It makes the prospect of the 2007 schedule release intriguing.
