"I Left My Heart: A Salute to the Music of Tony Bennett" is a musical revue featuring songs that Tony Bennett has performed many times over throughout his legendary career as a singer. A trio of credible vocalists, decked out in black tuxedos in the first act and suits and ties in the second act, takes on classic Bennett songs in this Connecticut premiere at Seven Angels Theatre.
Between numbers, the three performers alternate as narrators and provide sketchy biographical information such as the artist's birth name was Anthony Dominick Benedetto and that it was Bob Hope who shortened the name to Tony Bennett.
Since then, the name Tony Bennett has been tied to success in American popular music, standards, jazz, and even MTV. Bennett is the quintessential crooner and a hipster as well.
Meyer deLeuuw, Tom Chute, and Michael Chenkus all have strong voices. They don't pretend to be Bennett imitators, but they do represent the span of Bennett's career
Throughout the production the three singers are at their best when they sing all together, especially when they sing the title song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."
Tom Chute does a great job with "The Days of Wine and Roses," and "The Shadow of Your Smile." Meyer deLeuuw, a member of Actors' Equity Association, has the most spunk of the three and did a great job with "As Time Goes By." Chenkus, the youngest of the trio, at times seems too young to be crooning the songs he sings, but he really gets into "Fly Me to the Moon."
The musicians are wonderful. Richard DeRosa, the musical director of the show, is at the piano; Ryan Ford, drums; and James Turek plays a wicked trumpet.
